Mets’ Steve Cohen, Barstool’s Dave Portnoy engage in Twitter war over selling short GameStop stock, then kiss and make up Updated Jan 28, 2021; Posted Jan 28, 2021 Facebook Share. For your daily dose of breaking news, there’s this: Barstool Sports’ David Portnoy (aka El Presidente to his fanboys) got smacked on Twitter Tuesday night during the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Portnoy, meanwhile, did not apologize for his old comments. He explained them in an “Emergency Press Conference” on Twitter. “Here’s the thing: I’ve been doing this for two decades.

A watermelon and pizza connoisseur, who last week inadvertently filmed a Chicago carjacking while taste-testing a passerby’s McDonald’s Spicy McChicken sandwich, is followed not only for his entertainment value but also for his trading advice.
His Focus: As founder of Barstool Sports, a partner of Penn National Gaming, Inc. (NASDAQ: PENN), it’s not surprising Portnoy’s trading is focused on the sports betting sector. He does weigh in on other sectors, however, and recently supported retail traders as they tried to take on the Wall Street elite by running up meme stocks.

Man Of The People: Portnoy and VanEck Vectors, a U.S. investment firm, recently launched an ETF that holds stocks trending on social media. The move came following the GameStock Corporation (NYSE: GME) and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (NYSE: AMC) mania. The VanEck Vectors Social Sentiment ETF (NYSE: BUZZ) doesn’t hold meme stocks, however. Some of the top holdings in the fund are Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR) at 3.52% and DraftKings Inc (NASDAQ: DKNG), which makes up 3.37% of its holdings.
Swaying The Crowd: Like Chamath Palihapitiya, Portnoy’s tweets sometimes bring controversy. A wild card who can become aggressive for seemingly no reason, Portnoy’s live trading videos often echo a person watching their favorite sports team win or lose, which makes him exciting to watch. Portnoy is also known to pick fights with hedge funds and sets up Wall Street-versus-Main Street duels in doing so.
“PRISON TIME. Dems and Republicans haven’t agreed on 1 issue till this. That’s how blatant, illegal, unfathomable today’s events are. It also shows how untouchable @RobinhoodApp @StevenACohen2C Citadel Point72 all think they are. Fines aren’t enough. Prison or bust,” Portnoy wrote in a tweet aimed at hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen amid the furor over Robinhood's trading halts in January.
He Sticks To His Game: Although sometimes venturing outside the sports sector, Portnoy usually sticks to what he knows, tweeting out advice on how to play Penn National.
“Don’t trust me. I could be wrong for 1st time in 20 years. I’m not a financial advisor. But only a fool wouldn’t buy the dip. $penn,” he wrote during last week's red streak.
Last month Portnoy took to Twitter to post a video in support of another e-gaming stock, claiming to have taken a $2.7 million position in Canada's Score Media and Gaming Inc. (NASDAQ: SCR), although he made his fans guess the company based on clues.

On the latest episode of “The Ben Shapiro Show: Sunday Special,” Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy talked politics, sports, and why he doesn’t stay away from social media altercations.
From disputes with AOC to defending his company from online attacks, Portnoy has a strong following on social media among fans who he says appreciate the candidness of his style. Just last month, for example, Portnoy took on a hockey commentator who accused Barstool Sports, the media company he founded in the early 2000s, of having a history of “unapologetic” racism and misogyny.

I know people say I should ignore guys like @GMillerTSN But I’ll never be able to do that. Barstool is 20 years of my life’s work. I’m proud of it. I’m proud of our fans. He attacked everything I’m about. If you don’t fight back against that what do you fight back against?

Portnoy told Shapiro in an interview airing Sunday, April 25, that he’s willing to debate with anyone — even in front of a crowd — but that he’s not willing to just stand around and take it when critics come at him first.
“There is an audience that appreciates, and it’s not even Left or Right, it’s kind of both, like, ‘I like how these guys aren’t backing down.’ And our audience allows us to do that, so people have always asked, ‘Why do you fight back’ or ‘Why do you push back’ or ‘Why don’t you just shut up when someone takes a shot at you that you feel is unfair,’ it’s like, I’m not going to do that. I will never throw the first punch, but if you throw a shot at me on Twitter — out of the clouds — it’s not my responsibility to protect you,” said Portnoy.

“I will never throw the first punch, but if you throw a shot at me on Twitter — out of the clouds — it’s not my responsibility to protect you,” he said.
Portnoy also talked about his repeated run-ins with the NFL, like the time security escorted him away from NFL headquarters for protesting in defense of Tom Brady during DeflateGate — or the time he was kicked out of the Super Bowl at half-time.
“When they suspended him for four games, we went and protested and — myself and three other Patriot fans who work for me — handcuffed ourselves to each other at NFL headquarters,” the Barstool sports founder told Shapiro. “We got arrested, spent a night in jail for that, and it continued to escalate.”
“I got dragged out of the Super Bowl, it was Patriots-Rams Super Bowl. I bought tickets, and at half-time, they literally had about ten security guards drag me out, in hand-cuffs, because they banned me from the Super Bowl,” added Portnoy.
Even when sports leagues take a moral stand, Portnoy said, they’re not concerned with morality; they’re more concerned about making money or trying to appease fans.
“We can agree morally whether something is right, or a protest is right, but I just don’t buy that with the leagues. They’re doing it, on what they think is best for their bottom line, and that, you know, they’ll find out, in the end, I guess whether it was right,” he said.
